by Jbs073009 h3 — July 31, 2009—For the first time, the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) voluntary Green Power Partnership has recognized 20 partners for generating the most green electricity on site, and the top 20 green power purchasers among its printing partners, in its quarterly updates of top green power purchasers.
Combined, the Top 20 On-site partners are generating and consuming more than 736 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of on-site green power annually. This is reportedly equivalent to the electricity needed to power more than 61,000 American homes annually.
The top five partners from the list of 20, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, City of San Diego, San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant (Calif.), and CalPortland, consumed and generated more than 535 million kWh of on-site green power, preventing CO2 emissions equivalent to those from more than 70,000 passenger vehicles per year, says EPA.
The Top 20 Printers list represents the largest purchasers among printing partners within the Green Power Partnership. The combined green power purchases of these organizations amounts to nearly 148 million kilowatt-hours of green power annually, which is the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power more than 14,700 average American homes each year, notes EPA.
The top five of the Top 20 Printers are: FedEx Office; EarthColor, Inc.; Sandy Alexander Inc.; DG3 – Diversified Global Graphics Group; and Williamson Printing. All but FedEx use green power for 100% of their annual energy needs.
EPA is also updating its other top partner lists for the quarter, including its National Top 50 purchasers list. Intel Corporation, PepsiCo, Whole Foods Market, Kohl’s Department Stores, and Dell Inc. rank as the top five overall of green power purchasers.
Other lists updated July 27 include the Top 10 Fortune 500, 100% Green Power Purchasers, Top 20 College & University, Top 10 Federal Government, Top 10 Retail, and Top 20 Local Government.
