First paint products gain BRE environmental certification

by Brianna Crandall — April 6, 2015—Three products from U.K. paint manufacturer Johnstone’s Trade are the first to have been certified to BRE Global’s Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) Verification Scheme in line with EN 15804 — the European standard for the sustainability of construction products.

BRE Global’s certification mark represents quality and ensures that products have undergone a rigorous verification process, says the organization. The three certified products are Acrylic Satin, Professional Gloss and Aqua Water Based Gloss. A further six products are lined up to go through the EPD process in the coming months.

An EPD is a standardized way of assessing the environmental impact of a product through its lifespan from raw materials and manufacturing to application, use and disposal. Credible EPDs, such as those offered by BRE Global, are independently verified to strict standards to ensure the underlying data, data handling and the EPD itself are consistently reliable, says the organization.

This credibility is said to give architects, facilities managers and other specifiers peace of mind that they are specifying products in keeping with environmental standards such as BREEAM, which is run by BRE.

“Unquestionably, we are in the midst of a movement towards the design and construction of the most sustainable buildings the U.K. has ever seen,” said Helen Tiplady, specification marketing manager at Johnstone’s Trade. “The Government’s insistence that all publicly procured buildings must be BIM compliant by 2016 has been a significant driving force behind this. At Johnstone’s, we have never been more confident that our range provides architects and specifiers with products that will help them meet such sustainable targets.”
