by Shane Henson — March 4, 2013— Membership is said to have its benefits, and according to a salary survey conducted by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), this is very true for facilities management (FM) professionals who gain membership into the organization, an independent professional body that regulates property professionals and surveyors in the United Kingdom and other nations.
RICS says its annual RICS and Macdonald & Company Rewards and Attitudes Survey found that, on average, its members earn 30 percent more (£14,000 p/a) than non-members. Last year, the average salary for a RICS-qualified FM professional in the U.K. was £63,927. This compares to just £49,529 for those who are not a member of the institution, and represents a pay gap of more than 29 percent, the organization points out.
“It is encouraging to see that those who adhere to RICS standards in the FM sector are being recognized for the additional expertise and strategic input they can offer,” says Johnny Dunford, RICS’ global commercial property director. “Clearly, employers are increasingly recognizing the importance of standards in the marketplace and within their own operations and are rewarding their workforce accordingly.
