by Brianna Crandall — November 8, 2010—The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced October 27 that a recent amendment to the FTC’s Appliance Labeling Rule will require that all televisions manufactured after May 10, 2011 must display EnergyGuide labels detailing the amount of energy they use.
The familiar yellow-and-black labels, long used on washing machines and refrigerators, will disclose the television’s estimated annual energy cost, and will compare that with the annual energy cost of other TVs with similar screen sizes.
The final rule requires that the new labels be visible from the front of the televisions, and allows manufacturers to use either a triangular label or a rectangular label.
The EnergyGuide labels will allow comparison of a TV’s estimated annual
energy cost with that of other TVs with similar screen sizes.
