GBCA: Australia’s proposed voluntary carbon market good for commercial building sector

by jbs061609 d3 — June 19, 2009—The Australian Coalition’s proposed voluntary carbon market could provide a number of opportunities for the commercial building sector, says the country’s leading green building organization, the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA).

Commenting on the Coalition’s recently announced Climate Change Strategy, the Chief Executive of the GBCA, Romilly Madew, said that a voluntary carbon market would allow the commercial building sector to fully participate in reducing its carbon emissions and be recognized for doing so.

“Australia’s commercial and residential buildings are responsible for 23 percent of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions,” she said. “It’s vitally important that we introduce measures that support Australia’s property and construction industries to improve energy efficiency in buildings and reduce Australia’s carbon footprint.”
