Graphic Products releases arc flash safety resources

by Brianna Crandall — February 22, 2016—Every three years, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) releases a new edition of NFPA 70E, the standard that helps reduce workers’ exposure to major electrical hazards when working on energized equipment. Graphic Products has summarized the 2015 standard to create a Best Practice Guide to Arc Flash Labeling and an Arc Flash PPE Quick Reference Guide, along with other resources.

Topics in this safety training resource include evaluating an electrical safety program, creating an arc flash label, and explaining arc flash PPE.

As Graphic Products puts it, “There’s always the quiet before the storm. The quiet is the slow and steady buzz of electricity fueling the machinery that runs our industrial economy. The storm is arc flash — an electrical explosion that vaporizes metal and burns anything in its path.”

Major changes to the 2015 NFPA standard include simplified label requirements and a more effective personal protective equipment (PPE) category system, the company points out.

The Best Practice Guide to Arc Flash Labeling topics include evaluating an electrical safety program, creating an arc flash label, and explaining arc flash PPE. The guide can be used as a safety training resource to help companies prevent workplace injuries and fatalities and comply with applicable OSHA standards.

The company also summarized elements of the 2015 standard to create an Arc Flash PPE Quick Reference Guide for the proper use of personal protective equipment, which the company reminds is the last line of defense.

The 2015 standard uses a new Arc Flash PPE Category system to replace the Hazard / Risk Category (HRC) previously used. The quick reference guide is an easy-to-use graphic that outlines the four PPE categories used to classify arc flash hazard ranges. The graphic details arc-rated clothing and personal equipment based upon the standard’s recommendations for equipment and practices.

The guide can be used as a safety training resource to help companies and employees avoid workplace injuries and fatalities, and comply with applicable OSHA standards. Facilities can request the complimentary quick reference guide or receive it as part of Graphic Products’ comprehensive Arc Flash Labeling Best Practice Guide (above).
