Green Building Council of South Africa launches guide for existing buildings

by Jbs111909 g3 — November 25, 2009—The Green Building Council of South Africa has released a guide for re-energizing valuable but “tired” assets and reducing operating costs of existing buildings, including a six-step plan for building owners or managers and a list of 200 initiatives to help readers get started. This practical, easy-to-use guide covers many simple changes across categories such as water, energy, management and waste.

Existing Buildings: Survival Strategies sets out how to create a strategy for survival in a complex and demanding world—a strategy that turns a tired asset into a more positive contribution. The challenges with existing buildings are explained clearly, along with the issues facing owners and occupiers. >From this an understanding of the wide range of opportunities to upgrade the reader’s property will begin to emerge, says GBCA.

The guide then takes the reader through a six-step process to implement a survival strategy, including tools and systems that can help in the decision-making process. The case studies selected will then demonstrate some of the outcomes from a range of these changes and interventions. There is also a wealth of other information and reference material included to guide more in-depth study and assessment.
