by Brianna Crandall — October 22, 2010—A new Rooftop Urban Agriculture course—reportedly the first of its kind in North America—will be launched at CitiesAlive, the 8th Annual Green Roof and Wall Conference in Vancouver, BC, Canada, on Wednesday December 1, 2010. The course has been developed, together with industry leaders, by Green Roofs for Healthy Cities, the North American green roof and wall industry association.
Covering multiple approaches, the Introduction to Rooftop Urban Agriculture course educates participants on growing food on rooftops through design and maintenance principles, and includes case studies drawn from across North America. It is expected that the course will help promote the creation of many successful urban agriculture installations in cities across the continent.
The course was developed by a committee of green roof, horticultural and sustainable architecture experts over the past year, through researching urban agriculture projects, systems and design techniques. It will be presented by Keith Agoada, founder of Sky Vegetables, an innovative urban agriculture company dedicated to building sustainable, commercial-scale hydroponic farms on urban rooftops, and Paul Kephart, executive director and renowned biologist at Rana Creek Restoration and Living Architecture.
