Green Seal revises standards for specialty cleaning products

by Brianna Crandall — May 28, 2014—Green Seal, a nonprofit organization that uses science-based programs to develop life cycle-based sustainability standards and offer third-party certification, has revised its Green Seal Standard for Specialty Cleaning Products for Household Use (GS-52) and the Green Seal Standard for Specialty Cleaning Products for Industrial and Institutional Use (GS-53) in order to better reflect the current market of environmentally preferred specialty cleaning products.

GS-52 and GS-53 cover routinely used products such as dish soaps, graffiti removers, deck and outdoor cleaners, odor removers, furniture polish, metal cleaners, upholstery cleaners and antimicrobial pesticides.

Revisions were made to the following criteria in these standards:

  • Asthmagens and Respiratory Sensitizers
  • Carcinogen Releasers
  • Dermal Toxicity
  • Chronic Aquatic Toxicity and Antimicrobial Agents
  • Energy, Air, Water, and Waste; and Distribution
  • Fragrance Disclosure and Labeling
  • Annex E — Microorganisms
  • Packaging Sustainability Requirements
  • Appendix 1 — Scope
  • Additional editorial changes

Details about the changes to GS-52 and GS-53 are available on the Green Seal Web site.
