HPFI introduces safe, ionized silver antimicrobial finish for wood seating

by Shane Henson — September 26, 2011—High Point Furniture Industries (HPFI) has released a new product that can assist facilities personnel in universities, healthcare and hospitality settings, and other types of facilities in preventing the spread of germs.

The company’s Sentinel finish process for wood-seating products utilizes the antimicrobial, antibacterial agents of the silver ion process to effectively kill germs. It is included as a standard component of the wood finishing process and does not require any special order handling, specification or upcharge on any HPFI wood seating component.

According to HPFI, ionized silver compounds have shown a toxic effect on some bacteria, viruses, algae and fungi, typical for heavy metals like lead or mercury, but without the high toxicity to humans normally associated with these other metals. It is widely used in topical gels and even bandages because of its antimicrobial properties.
