September 11, 2015—American Hydrotech, developer and distributor of premium waterproofing and roofing products, just announced that its green roof and waterproofing technology is installed in the newly built Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. These green spaces are part of a new home of the National Football League’s (NFL) San Francisco 49ers that is not only powered by the latest technology but is on track to become the first NFL stadium to open with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.
More than 350,000 sq. ft. of American Hydrotech’s Monolithic Membrane 6125 waterproofing membrane was used to install a green roof atop the suite tower on the west side of the stadium, along with 60,000 sq. ft. in below-grade vertical applications. Hanover Architectural pavers offer added flexibility to the design of the 25,000 sq. ft. of Garden Roof Assembly and 23,000 sq. ft. of Ultimate Assembly full of growing local media, creating an inviting space that will be enjoyed by fans for years to come. American Hydrotech materials can also be found on more than 60,000 sq. ft. of below-grade vertical walls throughout the stadium.
American Hydrotech’s modular Garden Roof Assembly requires minimal maintenance and can be used on flat or sloping roofs to reduce and delay stormwater runoff and help mitigate the urban heat island effect. The modular Ultimate Assembly architectural pavers offer high compressive strength, low moisture absorption, and a wide variety of colors and textures. Open joint assembly installation facilitates the flow of water below the paver surface to concealed drains, while also eliminating ponding water and trapped moisture, and drains and all assembly components are easily accessible.
The 426,000 sq. ft. Levi’s Stadium was designed by Howard Needles Tammen & Bergendoff California Architects (HNTB) and built by joint venture Turner Devcon, and is said to be the most eco-friendly and sustainable facility in the league. The structure takes advantage of the Silicon Valley climate and resources; it is predominantly open and airy, with state-of-the-art technology used throughout, including 13,000 square feet of video boards and free Wi-Fi for all 60,000-plus fans (developed by local talent).
The stadium also sports cutting-edge sustainable features in addition to the unique green roof:
- Three solar bridges with hundreds of solar panels connecting the main parking area to the stadium;
- Recycled water used for landscape irrigation, toilets and urinals along with water‐conserving fixtures;
- No use of CFC‐based refrigerants in the HVAC systems;
- Permanent monitoring systems that provide feedback on ventilation system performance;
- Diversion, recycling and/or salvaging 75 percent of nonhazardous construction waste; and
- Controllable and programmable lighting control systems and thermal comfort control systems.
