April 20, 2005—The International Facility Management Association (IFMA) and the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International have reached an agreement to work together to develop common definitions for floor area measurements.
These common definitions will be used in standards supported by each organization. The primary goal of this effort is to clarify building measurement and industry comparisons based on floor area measurements.
To facilitate this work, IFMA and BOMA have appointed a Working Group comprised of key members from both organizations. These professionals have extensive background and experience in floor measurement issues. The Working Group will identify other important stakeholders, as necessary, to fulfill its mission.
The mandate for the Working Group is to arrive at commonly agreed upon definitions that will be contained in each floor measurement standard. Additionally, the Working Group will collaboratively develop commentaries for each floor area measurement standard with parallel definitions that elaborate on the floor area measurement process.
These definitions and commentaries quickly should be easily understood by non-technical readers, fair to users, uniform and easy-to-use.
