IIDA announces Perkins+Will winner of 43rd annual Interior Design Competition

by Brianna Crandall — July 11, 2016 — The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) announced Perkins+Will in Chicago, Illinois, as the Best of Competition winner of the 43rd annual Interior Design Competition for its project, the Newell Rubbermaid Design Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan, at IIDA’s black-tie gala in June. The IIDA Interior Design Competition recognizes outstanding, innovative interior design/interior architecture projects that encourage new ideas and techniques in the design and furnishings of interior spaces.

IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, LEED AP, said the Newell Rubbermaid Design Center “illustrates the evolution to a less formal workplace while maintaining a level of sophistication and professionalism, engaging employees with spaces that inspire the imagination and facilitate collaboration.”

Scott Hierlinger, FIIDA, LEED AP (Design Director, Nelson), commented on behalf of the jury:Perkins+Will succeeded in designing a creative work environment that supports the product development of the company, creates a sense of place, and honors the legacy of craftsmanship in the region. The design of the Newell Rubbermaid Design Center is restrained and beautiful, exemplifying the ethos that less is truly more.”

IIDA announced the complete list of winners of its premier design competitions, the 43rd Interior Design Competition and 24th Will Ching Design Competition, in March. The Will Ching Design Competition celebrates commercial interior design projects from firms of five employees or fewer.

 The 2016 Interior Design Competition winning projects and firms are:

  • LAGO by Julian Serrano at Bellagio Resort and Casino, Las Vegas, NV, USA; Studio Munge, Toronto, Canada
  • Newell Rubbermaid Design Center, Kalamazoo, MI, USA; Perkins+Will, Chicago, USA

The 2016 winner of the Will Ching Design Competition is:

  • Pax & Parker, Fort Worth, TX, USA; Bart Shaw Architect, Fort Worth, TX, USA
