Inn at Laguna Beach swaps plastic access key cards for wood

by Shane Henson — May 11, 2012—After undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation, the Inn at Laguna Beach will likely impress guests with its many sustainable features, including one that can be carried in the palm of one’s hand. The hotel is excited to announce that it is first in the city to implement 100% renewable wood key cards, and has completely eliminated plastic key cards as part of its effort to be more environmentally friendly.

The Nordic birch wood, used for the key cards, is harvested from certified sustainably managed forests in Europe, which reduces the carbon footprint by lowering CO2 emissions. These PVC (polyvinyl chloride)-free biodegradable wood key cards also help reduce oil-based plastic waste, says the hotel.

“The sustainability aspect of the key card as well as the renovation aligns with our overall vision. It is a perfect match with the Inn at Laguna’s participation in the international ‘Clean the World’ project,” said Peggy Trott, general manager for the hotel.
