International Architecture Awards honor innovative architectural firms

by Shane Henson — August 10, 2011—Ninety new building projects, urban plans, and landscape architecture were lauded during this year’s International Architecture Awards program, hosted by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design, and co-presented by Metropolitan Arts Press Ltd.

For the 2011 International Architecture Awards, the museum received hundreds of submissions from design firms in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. According to those in charge of the event, the submissions ranged from the latest new corporate high-tech headquarters to smaller planning projects, bridges, memorials, sacred spaces, and private residences. Criteria for submissions included any commercial, corporate, institutional, or residential building type or urban planning project, built or unbuilt worldwide, designed since January 1, 2008.

A sample of those receiving recognition includes:

  • Kjellgren Kaminsky for Mirage Dance Hall in Falsterbo, Sweden
  • Elding Oscarson for a private townhouse in Landskrona, Sweden
  • Original Vision Limited for Villa Amanzi in Phuket, Thailand
  • Manuelle Gautrand Architecture for the refurbishment and extension of Lille Modern Contemporary and Outsider Art Museum in Villeneuve d’Ascq, France
  • HASSELL for Harbin Taiping International Airport in the People’s Republic of China. Associate Architects were April Yang Design Studio, and China Northeast Architectural Design and Research Institute.
