International Code Council develops green building inspector certification

by Rebecca Walker — December 8, 2008—The International Code Council (ICC) is currently developing an Inspector of Green Building Technologies certification exam that will allow code officials to demonstrate their understanding of the application of green building technology and various state and local green building programs. According to the ICC, this new certification will also provide assurance that green and sustainable buildings are safe and up to code.

Code officials and inspectors certified under the Inspector of Green Building Technologies program will obtain an understanding of the green aspects of the International Codes, including the International Energy Conservation Code and the International Plumbing Code. The program will also measure knowledge levels of leading green building rating programs, such as the US Green Building Council’s LEED rating systems and the Green Building Initiative’s Green Globes program. A rollout date for the certification program has yet to be announced.
