IREM joins American University, University of Alabama to advance real estate management education, careers

by Brianna Crandall — May 23, 2014—The Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM) recently signed a separate Memorandum of Understanding with both Washington, DC-based American University’s Kogod School of Business and the University of Alabama (UA), founded in 1831 as Alabama’s first public college. The two documents outline a partnership to advance the real estate management profession through education and encourage interest in the profession as an attractive career opportunity.

IREM says it has long been committed to promoting real estate management careers and attracting a pool of new talent to the industry through academic outreach. The Kogod School of Business offers a Master of Science in Real Estate that prepares its graduates to pursue careers in a wide range of commercial real estate sectors. UA’s Department of Economics, Finance, and Legal Studies, housed within the university’s Culverhouse College of Commerce, offers a Bachelor of Science in Finance with a Specialization in Real Estate. UA’s Manderson Graduate School of Business offers a Master of Science in Finance, with a Specialization in Real Estate.

Under the terms of the MOUs, IREM will:

  • Recognize Kogod and UA as providers of graduate real estate education on IREM’s Web site and in other promotional materials.
  • Recognize Kogod’s Master of Science in Real Estate and UA’s BS and Master’s degrees with a Specialization in Real Estate as programs that fulfill specified educational requirements for IREM’s Certified Property Manager (CPM) designation.
  • Provide Kogod and UA with resource material to use in developing their real estate curriculum and materials about careers in real estate management for distribution to their students.
  • Connect Kogod to IREM’s Greater Metropolitan Washington, DC, Chapter 8 and other IREM chapters in the Washington, DC, area, and UA to IREM’s Alabama Chapter No. 43, for purposes of mutual collaboration.

For their part, Kogod and UA will, among other initiatives:

  • Recognize IREM as a principal provider of real estate management education and credentials.
  • Utilize IREM textbooks and resource material, as appropriate, to develop and deliver their real estate management curriculum.
  • Make information about IREM’s Student Membership program available and promote the program, as appropriate.

In addition to these two programs, IREM currently has collaborative agreements with: University of Alaska – Anchorage, AK; Georgetown University, Washington, DC; St. Augustine’s University, Raleigh, NC; Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA; Ball State University, Muncie, IN; University of Central Florida, Orlando, FL; California State University – Fullerton, Fullerton, CA; Peirce College, Philadelphia, PA; Cornell University, Ithaca, NY; University of Wisconsin-Stout, Menomonie, WI; University of San Diego, San Diego, CA; University of Missouri – Kansas City, Kansas City, MO; University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, IA; and the University of Baltimore, Baltimore, MD.
