ISO/IEC standard to globally harmonize energy efficiency, renewables terms

by jbs030310 d3 — March 8, 2010—International dialogue on energy will be facilitated by a future international standard harmonizing energy efficiency and renewable sources terminology, according to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), who plan to jointly develop the standard.

The international standard will identify and define terms used in the field of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. It will support the metrics, calculation and assessment methods, methodologies and best practice needed by policy makers, industry, standards writers and many other stakeholders.

Currently, 40 countries are involved as participants and observers, eight of which actively participated in the joint project committee’s (ISO/IEC/JTC 2) first plenary meeting. The committee says the standard draws from the sectors of energy, building, industry, transport, agriculture, equipment and network design, services, etc., as well as public authorities, NGOs, and other stakeholders, and asserts that harmonized definitions are a prerequisite to enable the different stakeholders to work together and develop shared tools.
