by Brianna Crandall — October 17, 2014—Leafield Environmental has created four custom recycling units for Bath Spa University’s landmark Learning Centre building, which opened its doors last month. Leafield developed the units to deliver the best solutions for the building’s diverse spaces while complementing the contemporary look and feel of the new center. Two of the recycling units are described below.
Residence halls: EnviroStack
Leafield Environmental created a modern space-saving recycling unit for Bath Spa University’s newly completed residence halls, part of the Learning Centre building.
The discreet and compact EnviroStack fits snugly into the student kitchens and allows collection of up to four types of recycling in one flexible and stackable unit. The affordable, lightweight bins will be used bag-free as part of the university’s pledge to become “bagless,” supporting its strategy to save money and increase recycling rates by 80 percent by 2016.
EnviroStack slimline units have a spacious capacity of 52 liters and can be used as a single unit or in stackable groups, with or without plastic bags. The space-saving design easily fits into any modern setting, and the WRAP-compliant, colorful lids can suit up to seven different waste streams. The bin body can be produced in a wide variety of colors, and a black version can be made from 100 percent recycled plastic.
Learning center: SteriBin
Leafield also developed an internal recycling bin for Bath Spa University’s newly opened state-of-the art learning center. The stylish SteriBin is a functional pedal-operated unit designed to blend seamlessly with the modern look and feel of the building.
The SteriBin has integral pedals and wheels for easy transit to collection points, and can be produced in a range of colors. The WRAP-compliant vibrant lids can suit up to eight different waste streams, and each bin has a capacity of up to 65 liters, with an optional plastic liner. The handle was added to allow easy access to the bins for wheelchair users unable to operate the pedal.
Leafield points out that universities are putting waste management at the top of the agenda to maximize significant environmental benefits as well as cost savings. Installing a more efficient waste management system with clear signage can drive up recycling rates by more than 50 percent in just a few months, asserts the company.
