Lists of top green power purchasers updated by EPA

by Jbs020409 f3 — February 6, 2009—The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a quarterly update January 26, 2009 of its rankings of green power purchasers under the EPA Green Power Partnership. The quarterly lists, highlighted below, rank the leading purchasers of green power as of January 6 in several categories.

Most of the top five places remained the same for this quarter. The major changes were in the National Top 50, where the US Air Force reduced its green power usage and descended from 3rd to 7th place (although it remains at the top of the Top 10 Federal Government list), and Wells Fargo & Company did the same, descending from 5th to 20th, and from 4th to 12th in the Fortune 500 list. Kohl’s Department Stores increased its green power usage, but it remains in the #2 place of the Top 20 Retail.

The first five of the National Top 50 Green Power Partners are:

  1. Intel Corporation (1,302,040,000 kWh/year; 47% of total electricity use);
  2. PepsiCo (1,144,773,154; 100%);
  3. Dell, Inc. (553,708,000; 158%);
  4. Whole Foods Market (526,995,000; 100%); and
  5. The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. (470,216,838; 100%).

The first five of the Fortune 500 Challenge Green Power Partners are:

  1. Intel Corporation (1,302,040,000 kWh/year; 47% of total electricity use);
  2. PepsiCo (1,144,773,154; 100%);
  3. Dell, Inc. (553,708,000; 158%);
  4. Whole Foods Market (526,995,000; 100%); and
  5. The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. (470,216,838; 100%).

EPA’s 100% Green Power Purchasers list represents all of the Green Power Partner organizations that are buying green power to meet 100% of their US organization-wide electricity use. The top purchasers include:

  1. PepsiCo (1,144,773,154 kWh/year);
  2. Dell, Inc. (553,708,000; 158%);
  3. Whole Foods Market (526,995,000);
  4. The Pepsi Bottling Group, Inc. (470,216,838); and
  5. US Environmental Protection Agency (285,000,000).

The Ivy League was on top again among the Top 20 College & University Green Power Partners. The top five individual champions include:

  1. University of Pennsylvania, PA (Ivy League) 192,727,000 kWh/year; 46% of total electricity use;
  2. New York University, NY (University Athletic Assoc.) 132,000,000; 100%;
  3. Pennsylvania State University, PA (Big Ten Conf.) 83,600,000; 20%;
  4. Oregon State University, OR (Pacific-10 Conf.) 66,680,400; 74%; and
  5. California State University System (Numerous) 66,189,000; 9%.

The first five of the Top 10 Federal Government Green Power Partners are:

  1. US Air Force: 426,233,000 kWh/year; 5% of total electricity use;
  2. US Environmental Protection Agency: 285,000,000; 100%;
  3. US Department of Energy: 157,964,000; 3%;
  4. US Department of Veterans Affairs: 110,000,000; 4%; and
  5. US General Services Administration / Region 2: 78,930,000; 34%.

The first five of the Top 20 Local Government Green Power Partners are:

  1. City of Houston, TX: 350,400,000 kWh/year; 27% of total electricity use;
  2. City of Dallas, TX: 333,659,840; 40%;
  3. City of Chicago, IL: 214,635,000; 20%;
  4. Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts: 171,144,000; 54%; and
  5. Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission: 70,000,000; 33%;

The Top 20 Retail list represents the largest purchasers among retail partners within the Green Power Partnership. The first five include:

  1. Whole Foods Market (526,995,000 kWh/year; 100% of total electricity use);
  2. Kohl’s Department Stores (258,990,000; 22%);
  3. Starbucks (205,000,000; 22%);
  4. Staples (127,322,000; 21%); and
  5. Lowes (101,000,000; 2%).
