Navigant Research: Siemens, Schneider Electric top list of building energy management systems (BEMS) providers

by Brianna Crandall — August 22, 2014—The surge in demand for energy management technology has expanded, and heated up, the competitive landscape for building energy management systems (BEMSs) in recent years, points out a new report from Navigant Research. More than 400 companies, from industry stalwarts such as Schneider Electric and Johnson Controls to specialized control vendors and pure-play software startups, are now active in this sector. According to the new Leaderboard report, Schneider Electric and Siemens now lead the BEMS market in terms of strategy and execution.

“The rise of BEMSs has enabled new levels of insight into and analysis of energy and operational data that was not possible just five years ago,” says Eric Bloom, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “This intensely competitive market will more than double in size over the next 6 years, reaching $5.6 billion in annual market value by 2020.”

Known globally as a vendor of building control systems, Schneider Electric has leveraged its knowledge of individual building systems to provide much higher-level analytics capabilities in the last five years, says Navigant. Siemens, which has historically lagged behind other buildings industry stalwarts in the BEMS market, significantly accelerated its position through its acquisition of Pace Global Energy Services, a management software company and consultancy with a C-suite focus.

The Navigant Research Leaderboard Report: Building Energy Management Systems examines the strategy and execution of 14 leading players with BEMS platforms that provide enterprise-level energy management and sophisticated data analytics offerings.

These BEMS vendors are rated on 10 criteria: vision, go-to-market strategy, partnership strategy, technology and solution portfolio, geographic coverage, user interface, breath/depth of applications, technology openness and interoperability, customer acquisition and partnerships, and scalability and staying power.

Using Navigant Research’s proprietary Leaderboard methodology, vendors are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses in the growing BEMS market.
