NEC updates its full suite of NEC3 project management contracts

by Brianna Crandall — May 20, 2013—The internationally acclaimed NEC3 suite of contracts, documents and guides is currently being re-launched with updates and improvements as part of a new NEC3 April 2013 Edition Box Set. First published in 1993 and called the “New Engineering Contract,” NEC is a family of contracts that facilitates the implementation of sound project management principles and practices as well as defining legal relationships. The updated collection covers the lifespan of a project from initial concept and design through to build and post-build management.

The NEC3 contracts are endorsed by the construction client board of the U.K. Cabinet Office for use on all public sector construction projects. The British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) and the Facilities Management (FM) Board also recommend the use of the NEC3 Term Service Contracts (TSC) to support best practices in FM procurement in the public sector. BIFM says the TSC contracts offer members working in the public and private sector a key contracting and project management tool.

This updated suite of contracts, said to be the most comprehensive yet, target a wide spectrum of users from contract and procurement managers, facilities managers and surveyors to commercial directors and lawyers, and are designed to meet a wide range of industry needs. The collection includes an updated version of all the contracts, guidance notes and flowcharts previously available, as well as new “How To” practical guides designed specifically to aid practitioners in their use of NEC3 by improving the setup and management of their NEC3 contracts.
