NEMA announces electrical standards for wiring, lighting

by Brianna Crandall — April 1, 2016—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) made several announcements in recent weeks about various electrical standards. Several of these are highlighted below.

UC 2 Undercarpet Power Distribution Systems

NEMA reaffirmed UC 2 Undercarpet Power Distribution Systems. This systems-based standard defines the component parts of the system and establishes ratings, electrical and mechanical performance properties, and test procedures for installed systems.

UC 2-1993 (R2000, R2005, R2010, R2015) may be purchased in hard copy for $70 or downloaded at no cost on the NEMA Web site.

C78.1430 Slide Projector Lamps

NEMA also announced that ANSI Accredited Standards Committee C78 reaffirmed C78.1430 Slide Projector Lamps, Condensing, Dichroic, 1.65-in. (42 mm), Integral Reflector, Rim Reference Tungsten-Halogen Lamps with GX5.3 Bases. This standard defines the dimensional limits and other physical characteristics required to ensure commonality and interchangeability and to assist in the proper application of projection lamps.

ANSI C78.1430 (R2009, R2016) is available for download or hard copy for $50.

NEMA’s Lighting Systems Division, as secretariat of ANSI’s ASC C78 for Electric Lamps, is looking for industry experts in the User and General Interest categories to participate in standards development activities. Contact NEMA at nemalighting@nema.org if interested; indicate interest category and area of expertise.

C136.2-2015 Dielectric Withstand and Electrical Transient Immunity Requirements

In addition, NEMA announced that ANSI Accredited Standards Committee C136 revised ANSI C136.2-2015 Dielectric Withstand and Electrical Transient Immunity Requirements. This standard covers luminaires and control devices classified for up to 600-volt operation. It is also intended for use in roadway and area lighting applications. It contains minimum performance requirements and test procedures for evaluating luminaire and control devices under test for the following: dielectric withstand, and electrical transient immunity.

ANSI C136.2-2015 may be purchased or downloaded for $40 on the NEMA Web site.

WD 1 General Color Requirements for Wiring Devices

NEMA also reaffirmed NEMA WD 1 General Color Requirements for Wiring Devices. This standard contains color references for AC switches, plugs and cord connectors, receptacles, and other related wiring devices.

NEMA WD 1-1999 (R2005, R2010, R2015) may be purchased in hard copy for $39 or downloaded at no cost on the NEMA Web site.

ANSI C136.15-2015 Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment — Luminaire Field Identification

Lastly, NEMA announced that ANSI Accredited Standards Committee C136 revised ANSI C136.15-2015 Roadway and Area Lighting Equipment — Luminaire Field Identification. This standard provides a simple, uniform method for identifying the type and wattage rating of outdoor lighting equipment such as poles, arms, luminaires and control devices used for roadway and area lighting. Types include high-intensity discharge, fluorescent, compact fluorescent, light-emitting diode / solid state lighting, induction, and plasma technologies.

ANSI C136.15-2015 may be purchased in hard copy or downloaded for $40.
