NEMA guidelines cover preventive maintenance of switches

by Brianna Crandall — December 8, 2010—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published KS 3-2010 Guidelines for Inspection and Preventive Maintenance of Switches Used in Commercial and Industrial Applications.

KS 3’s guidelines are intended to be used to identify switches requiring maintenance or replacement. When appropriately maintained, switches can provide reliable protection for many years. Regular inspection and preventive maintenance help ensure that a high level of protection is provided to personnel and electrical equipment, notes NEMA.

Topics covered in the publication include safety procedures, general guidance, inspection procedures, preventive maintenance, non-destructive test procedures, and the operation of accessory devices.

KS 3 may be downloaded at no charge, or a hardcopy purchased for $58, by visiting the NEMA Web site or by contacting IHS at 800/854-7179 (within the U.S.) or 303/397-7956 (international).
