by Brianna Crandall — September 13, 2010—The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has published a guide for selecting, installing and managing outdoor lighting. LSD 11-2010 White Paper on Outdoor Lighting Issues and Quality Lighting Applications, last published in 2004, was produced by NEMA’s Lighting Systems Division and is available for free download.
LSD 11 identifies specific lighting issues, defines correct lighting terminology, and provides straightforward technical guidance applicable to outdoor lighting installations in the U.S. The publication is intended to be used by anyone dealing with the selection, installation or management of outdoor lighting systems.
This revision includes updated information on existing regulations, top issues in the industry, and lighting technologies. It helps readers select the right outdoor lighting for a particular application by addressing energy consumption, sky glow, visibility, safety and security, interaction with natural habitats, and other concerns, and helps make sense of the sometimes conflicting guides and regulations on lighting.
The publication joins some 40 other white papers in the NEMA LSD series covering such lighting topics as ballast disconnects, occupancy sensors, and photoluminescent exit signage. To view a comprehensive list of NEMA LSD white papers, visit the NEMA Web site.
