NEMA titles cover smart grid, lighting controls

by Brianna Crandall — June 1, 2016 — The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) published resources on smart grid interoperability and performance testing for lighting controls and switching devices in recent weeks, as highlighted below.

ANSI / NEMA SG-IPRM 1-2016 Smart Grid Interoperability Process Reference Manual

The ANSI / NEMA SG-IPRM 1-2016 Smart Grid Interoperability Process Reference Manual was a joint effort by the NEMA Distribution Automation Technical Committee and Smart Grid Interoperability Panel’s (SGIP) Smart Grid Testing and Certification Committee.

“This standard defines requirements and recommendations for general test policies, test suite specifications, test profiles, interoperability testing and certification authority technical programs, governance, laboratory qualifications, and process improvements. It also describes an implementation approach,” according to NEMA Program Manager Khaled Masri.

“The approval of ANSI / NEMA SG-IPRM 1-2016 represents a substantial effort by SGIP’s membership and our commitment to interoperability and advancing grid modernization through industry collaboration. It contains testing and certification recommendations and best practices that promote the introduction of interoperable products in the marketplace,” said Aaron Smallwood, Director of Technology Operations, SGIP.

The 54-page ANSI / NEMA SG-IPRM 1-2016 Smart Grid Interoperability Process Reference Manual is available in hard copy or electronic download for $108 in the NEMA Standards Store.

NEMA 410-2015 Performance Testing for Lighting Controls and Switching Devices with Electronic Drivers and Discharge Ballasts

The updated NEMA 410-2015 Performance Testing for Lighting Controls and Switching Devices with Electronic Drivers and Discharge Ballasts standard covers the definition, measurement, and testing of characteristics relevant to the use and application of lighting controls and electronic drivers, discharge ballasts, and self-ballasted lamps.

Originally developed in 2011, this revision includes the addition of 347 V test requirements.

The 33-page NEMA 410-2015 Performance Testing for Lighting Controls and Switching Devices with Electronic Drivers and Discharge Ballasts is available in hard copy for $94 or electronic download at no cost on the NEMA Web site.
