by Ann Withanee — June 22, 2012—Not constricted by using the more traditional seating that is usually found in offices, facilities managers can now offer their occupants Leland International’s Quarry Bench seating. The casual seating encourages a collaborative, flexible workspace. For this light approach to seating, Leland’s Quarry garnered a Gold Award in the Best of NeoCon product competition held in June during the annual NeoCon contract furnishings show at The Merchandise Mart, Chicago.
Quarry designer Bruce Sienkowski took a form from nature and simplified it to create a collaborative workspace. Looking at the idea of rocks and stumps, he settled on a rock quarry. The asymmetrical shapes work well for seating. Also, by configuring the different shapes, spaces can be created that have an organic, natural feel. A very distinct and intentional stitch line mimicking a rock fissure helps to further define their shape.
The various shapes of Quarry, each named after different rocks and minerals, are designed to promote reconfiguration and encourage people to interact with the product as necessary depending on the type of meeting that is taking place. Each shape complements and fits with the others while maintaining a unique organic aesthetic and flexibility to support many different seating postures. Quarry benches can be specified in textiles from any of Leland’s partners, or COM. The rocks apparently have outcroppings, because practical options are offered such as a tablet arm, mobile tablet stand, power module, and screens with videoconference display or whiteboard surfaces.
“Work spaces have changed in a way that requires more impromptu meeting areas away from personal workstations,” said Vice President of Sales, Shanna Anderson. “There is also a need to provide support over a range of employees in varying age groups. Office employees expect a continuum in the support of technology throughout the environment. Quarry answers these needs by providing support for the technology along with seating blocks of various shapes and heights that can be configured for group settings.”
