by Brianna Crandall — June 28, 2013—Nucraft Furniture Company, known for its meticulously crafted office furniture, recently announced that its Flow XT Conference Table has received the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in the North American furniture industry, independently certified by SCS Global Services (SCS). The EPD was on display in the Nucraft showroom at the NeoCon 2013 exposition and conference for commercial interiors at The Merchandise Mart in Chicago. The company also announced that other new or enhanced Nucraft products on display at the show won awards in the Best of NeoCon Competition.
Flow XT Conference Table EPD
An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a transparent disclosure of environmental performance based on life cycle assessment (LCA). EPDs are increasingly popular in the green building and commercial interior design sectors as a new method for informing customers about the environmental performance of products, and are now being reviewed for potential inclusion in industry environmental rating systems, such as the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) v4. Prepared in conformance with international standards (ISO 14025), EPDs describe the LCA study conducted, and provide LCA results for selected environmental impact categories.
The Nucraft Flow XT Conference Table EPD reports results for five such categories: Global Warming Potential over 100 years, Photochemical Oxidation Creation Potential (i.e., smog), Acidification Potential (i.e., acid rain), Stratospheric Ozone Formation Potential (i.e., ozone hole), and Eutrophication Potential (i.e., depletion of oxygen in water bodies caused by pollution). It is now publicly available for review in the SCS Certified Green Products Database .
Nucraft has also reportedly gained independent recognition under some of the most widely recognized certifications in the industry. For instance, Nucraft is a Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody certified manufacturer, and operates a manufacturing facility that is LEED-NC Silver certified. In addition, Nucraft offers BIFMA level certified products, its casegoods meet the ANSI/BIFMA x7.1 Furniture Emission Standards for indoor air quality, and all tables can be specified for FSC certified wood.
Award-winning products
Three of Nucraft’s new or enhanced products on display at the show won awards in the Best of NeoCon (BON) Competition: Agility reconfigurable tables designed by Jess Sorel brought home a Gold Award in the Tables: Training and Work category; the Merino Collection garnered a Silver Award in the Casegoods category; and Aja won Silver in the Tables: Occasional category. Aerial, designed by Aaron DeJule and a BON Gold Winner in 2005, was an entrant in the Furniture Systems: Enhancements category.
