NeoCon 2013: Patcraft’s Deconstructed carpeting offers bold new design approach; Design Catalyst wins Silver

by Brianna Crandall — June 14, 2013—High-performance commercial flooring provider Patcraft’s new Deconstructed carpet is not only recyclable and easy to clean and maintain, but it also reveals its strong foundation by exposing the carpet’s primary backing in creative, visually stunning ways. With striking patterns created by revealing a colored backing, Deconstructed brings what the company says is a radical approach to design and manufacturing.

“We’ve turned what carpet manufacturers are traditionally trying to cover into a primary design feature,” said Patcraft Creative Director Pamela Rainey, ASID, IIDA. “The manufacturing team is just as excited as the design team about the implications.”

Patcraft showcased its groundbreaking carpet concept at the NeoCon 2013 contract furnishings show in Chicago June 10-12, leveraging the opportunity to invite designer feedback to this reportedly first-of-its-kind product, which is currently being tested for market release in late 2013.

Deconstructed’s unique design concept was sparked by Rainey’s interest in the Deconstructivist trend. “During my travels, I continued to see chairs, watches, all sorts of things with their inner workings exposed. And I thought, why can’t we make all the components of the carpeting part of the overall design?” noted Rainey.

The primary backing for Deconstructed comes in bold colors such as hot pink, yellow or bold blue as well as neutral shades — allowing the customer to choose a colorful or neutral primary backing color and then add complementary color fibers at varying pile heights to create depth and texture that is distinctive to each carpet. Deconstructed offers users innovative design with the durability expected in Patcraft products, says the company.

Deconstructed is manufactured with Solution Q Extreme nylon. This unique fiber repels acid-based stains, allowing common food spills to be cleaned with just water, says Patcraft. The products are 100 percent recyclable and Cradle-to-Cradle Certified. Deconstructed also uses less raw materials and is lighter in weight than other carpeting — bringing sustainability benefits. Deconstructed will be competitively priced and will be available in both broadloom and carpet tile.

The Design Catalyst collection features two distinct texture tiles and a transitional, diagonal pattern tile that allows a designer to create room-defining insets, large-scale graphic patterns, and wayfinding elements.

Patcraft’s other new collection, Design Catalyst, was a Silver Award winner in the Hard Surface Flooring category in the prestigious Best of NeoCon Competition. Patcraft describes the collection as “One + One + One = Infinite possibilities.”

Inspired by a uniquely positioned angle captured in architectural photographs, Design Catalyst features three tile patterns that can be used together or individually to create an abundance of stunning installation variations from subtle to bold. Available in both carpet tile and resilient tile, the collection features two distinct texture tiles and a transitional, diagonal pattern tile that allows a designer to create unique patterns in the space including room-defining insets, large-scale graphic patterns, and wayfinding elements.

“The beauty of Design Catalyst is that it can be used in so many different ways. A designer could use it in multiple projects and create such unique looks that you wouldn’t know that each was from the same flooring collection,” said Patcraft Creative Director Pamela Rainey, ASID, IIDA, whose inspiration and team collaboration led the development of Design Catalyst.

Both Deconstructed and Design Catalyst are highlighted in a slide show on the Patcraft Web site.
