by Brianna Crandall — July 2, 2014—U.K.-based global technology company Dyson launched what is called its most powerful handheld cordless vacuum to date just in advance of the recent NeoCon show in Chicago, and according to a TechCrunch review, “it’s a beast.” Dyson says that powerful carpet pickup is no longer reserved for big, bulky cleaners, since the company’s engineers decided to install a motor right inside the cleaner head.

Said to be the first and only cordless vacuum with a direct-drive motor inside the cleaner head, the pace-setting Dyson Digital Slim DC59 Motorhead has no cord, yet reportedly out-cleans most full-size upright vacuums across hard floors and carpets when tested according to industry standards. The new vacuum is an enhanced variation of the DC59 Animal model Dyson launched a few months ago, but with 75 percent more brush power and a motor that is 1.5 times more powerful.

According to James Dyson, “Existing cordless machines simply do not deliver on carpets. By putting a motor directly in the brush bar, we’re able to push bristles deeper into carpets for superior performance, while maintaining the versatility of a handheld machine.” And along with 24 minutes of fade-free cleaning time, the streamlined vacuum is said to be quick and easy to maneuver between high, low and hard-to-reach spaces, with no more concern for plugs.

According to the company, Dyson Digital Slim DC59 Motorhead features include:

  • 75 percent more brush power: A newly configured cleaner head with a direct-drive motor creates 75% more brush bar power than DC59 Animal to better agitate carpet pile and tackle ground-in spills and stains.
  • All floor performance: While nylon bristles dig into carpets, carbon fiber filaments reduce the build-up of static charge, aiding in the capture of fine dust on hard floors.
  • Integrated motor technology: 1.5 times more powerful than its predecessor, the Dyson digital motor V6 draws power more efficiently from the battery, with nothing wasted.
  • 2 Tier Radial cyclones: 15 cyclones work in parallel across two tiers to increase airflow to capture fine dust.
  • Light, versatile and easy to store: A small, light motor in the hand, instead of at the floor, makes it easy to clean up top, down low and in between spaces. The lightweight aluminum wand can be detached for stairs, upholstery and other compact spaces, and hassle-free storage is provided with a wall-mounted docking station.

As with other Dyson products, the design does not hide the solid, extensive engineering process that went into its creation, but rather shows it off, with a “retro-futuristic crown for the motor component that makes you think vaguely of classic cars,” as the TechCrunch review puts it. The vacuum also reportedly sports a more ergonomic handle and trigger design than the previous model. The review concludes that the more-effective suction performance “actually seems to resuscitate carpet.”

Featuring an easy-release button to dispose of the dust and dirt from the receptacle, the new vacuum weighs 4.96 lbs., and comes with a convenient wall mount and attachment holder, as well as a two-year parts and labor warranty.
