by Brianna Crandall — July 3, 2015—Aerelight Design announced the first shipments of aerelight, which the company says is the world’s first consumer-ready OLED lamp, to initial backers six months after launching pre-orders, showcasing the innovative product at the NeoCon 2015 contract furnishings show in Chicago in June.
The aerelight task lamp fuses elegant modern form with OLED lighting technology to reimagine the future of lighting design, says Aere light Design, a product design team within Toronto-based OTI Lumionics focused on developing innovative organic light-emitting diode (OLED)-powered lighting,
aerelight is powered by a paper-thin energy-efficient OLED panel, with an expected lifetime of up to 20 years with typical usage, so there is reportedly never a need to replace a bulb. The OLED light panel emits a natural, glare-free source of soft warm light, using 80 percent less energy than a traditional 60W light bulb at its maximum brightness.
The uni-body frame is cut from a single piece of anodized aluminum and intuitively responds to touch, controlling power and dimming with each purposeful tap. A walnut hardwood base plate cleverly conceals a built-in wireless charging pad that charges Qi compatible mobile devices. Each aerelight is individually hand-crafted in Toronto, making each unit truly unique, says the company. aerelight is currently available in red, black and silver finishes.
“The phenomenal response from our pre-order backers has been very validating for us, and for the future of OLED lighting in general. The question regarding OLED lighting is no longer if, but rather when,” said Michael Helander, president and co-founder of OTI Lumionics. “Since launching pre-sales, we’ve not only seen an outpouring of support for aerelight, but also a massive uptick in the general interest in OLED as the future of lighting. Our goal is to help make OLED technology accessible, and as we begin shipping the world’s first consumer-ready OLED lighting product, we are working towards that goal.”
For a limited time, aerelight is still available for special pre-order pricing in the USA, U.K. and Canada. Expanded international distribution is expected for later this year.
