by Brianna Crandall — July 6, 2015—After five years of critical success with the ON chair with Trimension technology—crowned Best of Competition at NeoCon 2010—Germany-based furniture manufacturer Wilkhahn launched another office chair range with the same 3D kinematic movement at this year’s NeoCon contract furnishings show in Chicago. The new chair, called IN, won the Gold Award in the Seating: Ergonomic Desk/Task category in this year’s Best of NeoCon Competition.

The new IN seating combines a “stimulating” range of three-dimensional (3D) motion with superb comfort, says Wilkhahn. The patented 3D kinematic movement known as Trimension is said to be the first of its kind and the most advanced ergonomic technology in the task seating industry. Even when people are sitting, it encourages movement, facilitating healthiness and concentration for the user, says the company.
Innovative technologies applied to the materials and production process also give IN a unique look in the world of office chairs. The dynamic-athletic design, with its agile silhouette and advanced multi-weave mesh, is reminiscent of the high-tech sportswear industry. And the attractive medium-range price for IN means that even a broader base of customers can experience the benefits of Trimension.
The chair’s engineers and designers developed two swing arms that move independently of one another and are part of the patented 3D mechanism. They have a direct impact on an extremely powerful central spring, and the resistance can be adjusted by turning an intuitive knob. Together with an option to tilt forward 5 degrees, users from 100 to 300 pounds can select from a vast range of motion.
The flexible but supportive seat and back component, which is connected with the mechanism via “hip” and “knee” joints, helps the body keep its center of gravity. This high-tech item is made with two-component technology from the automotive industry in one single piece. And finally, the cover on the backrest, made of 3D Formstrick (form-fit knit) delivers the right support. The combination of these three elements adds up to a remarkably dynamic and comfortable experience while sitting on the chair, claims the company. Trimension allows for the most minute adjustments in posture and movement, so the user feels ultimately connected to the chair, as though it is a “second skin.”
The list of options includes everything required, and ranges from 3D armrests and height-adjustable, integrated lumbar support to patented seat-depth extension.
Alternatively, the backrest cover is also offered as a double-ply version with added foam. The covers on the seat cushion also come in the new Racer fabric, in form-fit knit to match the back, and in selected fabrics from the Wilkhahn collection. IN’s appearance can be adapted to suit design concepts ranging from understated yet consistent, to stylishly classy, to a definite athletic look.
