by Brianna Crandall — July 3, 2017 — At this year’s NeoCon contract furnishings show, global furniture and technology provider Steelcase showcased its new Creative Spaces (see FMLink article) concept, an expanded range of technology-enabled workspaces designed to foster creative thinking at work, jointly developed with Microsoft.
The company also celebrated its 105-year heritage by unveiling several new products, including the Surround Collection by Steelcase Healthcare, which earned a Best of NeoCon (see FMLink article) Gold award in the Healthcare Guest/Lounge Seating category, and the Verb Active Media Table by Steelcase Education, which garnered a Silver in the Education Solutions category. Three other innovative products are highlighted below: a height-adjustable desk for leaders, an entry-level ergonomic chair, and a freestanding enclosed space.
Steelcase Elective Elements height-adjustable desk
The Elective Elements height-adjustable desk is designed to support the well-being of leaders and professionals, giving them the ability to shift postures throughout the day without sacrificing the professional look of their office. Available in various configurations up to 36” x 90”and in several wood (veneer and laminate) finishes, this elegant desk cleanly conceals its height mechanisms within storage components and behind modesty panels.
This design makes the Elective Elements height-adjustable desk a beautiful and custom solution that meets the status and image requirements of leadership environments, private settings and other workspaces. An additional concealed function is the desk’s electric control with digital height read-out, which is positioned under the front edge of the worksurface. It can be programmed with pre-set heights to make adjustment easy and consistent over time.
Steelcase Series 1 chair
Steelcase Series 1 is an entry-level ergonomic chair that has all the basics, for high-quality seating attainable for everyone. The chair is said to deliver what’s important — ergonomics, quality and choice.
Series 1 features integrated LiveBack technology, adaptive bolstering and 4D-adjustable arms, which provide ergonomic performance and quality uncommon to this class of seating. It is designed with a lightweight, slim profile, making it appropriate for all offices. With a wide range of material, shell and finish options, the chair can make an impressive statement in any space.
Series 1 is available in seated and stool heights with headrest and coat hanger options to support a range of tasks and types of work. The 11 3D Micro Knit fabrics and lumbar/flexor plastics, as well as a variety of other fabrics, allow organizations to express their brand in a way that represents them best.
IRYS pod freestanding enclosed space
Complex global issues are requiring people to unlock their creative potential to solve problems at work. Meeting this expectation requires spaces to support collaboration, privacy, focus and rejuvenation, says Steelcase. Supporting this range of needs in today’s open environments is challenging, and while many organizations have added areas that support collaboration, the demand for enclosed spaces tends to exceed the supply, and installing these spaces can be time-consuming and difficult.
To meet today’s diverse spatial needs, Steelcase collaborated with Clestra Hauserman and HOK Product Design to develop the IRYS pod, a freestanding, all-inclusive solution that makes it easy to add enclosed spaces to the open plan. It can be ideal for individual focused work or small-group collaborative work, and its refined aesthetic allows the pod to seamlessly blend into any existing space.
Each pod incorporates four glass walls and a ceiling, with minimal framing and butt-glazed glass; includes lighting, air treatment and access to power (no heat or air-conditioning); and plugs in to a floor outlet. The pod can accommodate one to three people for either individual focused work or small-group collaborative work, and additional space under the pod’s outer canopy provides a collaborative touchdown area.
Unlike most enclosed-space solutions that require connection to the existing building structure, the IRYS pod is an autonomous, self-supporting unit that can be put up anywhere in the office. Easy to order and install as well as to take down and move, the IRYS pod ships in just two weeks and requires only one day for installation, allowing spaces to be quickly transformed to meet changing needs. Steelcase has exclusive rights to offer this product in North America.
