All users have to do is plug in their Powermat and place up to six different Powermat-enabled devices on the mat to charge. Charging occurs at the same rate, as if each device were charging with its own charger.

When a Powermat-enabled device is placed on the mat, a “handshake” process synchronizes the mat with the receiver and electric power is generated to meet the specific energy needs of the device.

Furniture manufacturer Teknion has embedded Powermat in various office and furniture worksurfaces allowing for modular and customized planning of work environments. Future applications can be embedded directly into walls, ceilings, tabletops or other surfaces, enhancing virtually any surface to become an invisible connectivity point for wire-free energy.

A bonus, says Powermat, is that this product eliminates the unmanageable tangle of “wire spaghetti” that accumulates behind and around workstations. It also eliminates the need to use multiple bulky chargers to power numerous electronic devices.

The portable version of Powermat charges up to three devices, folds into thirds, and is ideal for travel.

Powermat’s inductive technology pairs an ultra-thin mat (5 models to choose from) with a variety of receivers, which connect to selected electronic devices. Future applications can be embedded directly into walls, ceilings, tabletops or other surfaces, enhancing virtually any surface to become an invisible connectivity point for wire-free energy. The Powermat system even allows for the wireless transmission of data audio and video allowing users to sync their iPods or transmit video to their TVs at very efficient transfer rates, says the company.

The Best of NeoCon competition is sponsored by Contract magazine, Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc., The International Interior Design Association (IIDA), The International Facility Management Association (IFMA), and McMorowReport.com.
