by AF 0621 j3 — June 23, 2010—Teknion Corporation won a Gold award for its dna collection of modular lounge seating and tables, created by Acer Design in conjunction with Teknion’s in-house design team.

The award was in the category of Seating: Benches in The Best of NeoCon product competition held during NeoCon World’s Trade Fair at The Merchandise Mart, Chicago, in June. This marks the second Gold award for Teknion in the competition; the other is for the Conflux LED Lighting (see separate story).

Teknion notes that dna goes beyond the traditional requirements of lounge seating and was designed for collaboration by offering flexibility and easy access to power and communications.

“Collaboration occurs at various locations and any time of day as people share their knowledge, skills and experience to reach common goals,” said Geoffrey Milligan, Director of Design, Teknion. “Recognizing that such interaction is vital to innovation, companies are giving space to open, informal settings throughout the office that invite interaction and provide an outlet for collective creativity. The design intent behind dna was to provide a unique modular system of connectable units that, when configured, fosters collaboration so common in todays workplaces.” The office lounge was originally intended to be a waiting space adjacent to reception. It typically took up a lot of space and was rarely used by employees. With more office space now dedicated to collaborative work settings — both within enclosed rooms and in the open plan — lounge furniture has migrated throughout the office.

dna’s modular design allows components to connect on all sides for maximum planning flexibility. Modular units are reconfigurable by the user depending on the size and needs of the group. Optional bolsters may be positioned left, right or center on the bench. dna provides access to power and data to support technology needs. Integrated and freestanding tables provide support for work, access to power and data, and laptop use.

dna upholstery options provide a customized look using a wide range of standard, graded-in and COM fabrics. The bench and movable bolster are separate components, allowing various upholstery combinations of solids, textures and small-scale patterns that can be contrasted with large-scale designs. Lower-grade fabrics can be mixed with higher-cost options to achieve desired design performance and cost goals. Tables are available with veneer surfaces and Teknions new Compact Laminate.
