by jbs051310 a3 — May 14, 2010—A publication from ASTM International, STP 1514, Durability of Building and Construction Sealants and Adhesives (417 pages; stock # STP1514), is the latest volume in a continuing series that provides the most recent data from laboratory research and field work in the building and construction industry for all aspects of sealant and adhesive durability.

Twenty-one peer-reviewed papers cover a variety of topics, including:

  • Laboratory Testing and Specialized Outdoor Exposure Testing—adhesion lifetime of water-immersed joints; a long-term outdoor weathering study of construction sealants; and a new approach to joint sealing systems for pavement;
  • Factors Influencing the Durability of Sealed Joints and Adhesive Fixations—substrate durability guidelines used in silicone structural attachment; adhesion development of organic and silicone sealants on wet and dry concrete; and cleaning silicone residue from glass;
  • Development of New Test Methods and Performance-Based Specifications—windows designed to mitigate the impact of bomb blasts; effect of strain on the modulus of sealants exposed to outdoors; and development of accelerated aging test methodology for Bonded CFRP Systems; and
  • Field Experience with Sealed Joints and Adhesive Fixation—comparison of the outdoor weathering behavior of a laboratory-prepared high-performance acrylic sealant to that of a commonly used, commercially available two-part polyurethane sealant.
