On March 1, 2001, the New Jersey General Assembly Consumer Affairs and Regulated Professions Committee passed Assembly Bill No. 2768 to regulate the interior design industry. The bill provides for the certification of interior designers by the New Jersey State Board of Architects through the Interior Design Examiners and Evaluation Committee. Also, the bill requires each certified interior designer to complete continuing education units every two years for certification renewal. Applicants for such certification are required to meet education and experience requirements set forth in the bill, and pass an examination offered by the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ). Only qualified applicants may use the title “certified interior designer.”
The committee also amended the bill to remove a provision that would have allowed interior designers to submit documents to building officials.
A summary statement of the bill is available at the New Jersey Legislature Web site.
