New NIOSH publications cover noise controls, MSD prevention

by Brianna Crandall — February 26, 2014—The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) released several online publications in recent weeks covering such workplace safety topics as controls for noise exposure and resources to help prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), both of which are listed below.

Workplace Safety and Health Topics: Controls for Noise Exposure outlines an approach based on the hierarchy of control that occupational safety and health professionals can use to determine how to implement feasible and effective controls in order to reduce or remove specific noise hazards that may damage hearing. The hierarchy of preferred methods begins with eliminating the source of hazardous noise if possible, or substituting quieter equipment, or using engineering controls to reduce or remove noise at the source, with the use of personal protective equipment as a last resort. The site also offers numerous related resources.

NIOSH Science Blog: Persistent Pain in the Neck! What Resources Help You Prevent MSDs in the Workplace? offers resources to help occupational safety and health professionals as well as employees themselves prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and related injuries and illnesses associated with repetitive motion and/or overexertion at work.
