by Brianna Crandall — May 13, 2011—AmericanTowns is launching GreenTowns.com, a new online network that connects and celebrates green initiatives and their leaders, locally and nationally. Through GreenTowns, residents of thousands of U.S. towns and cities can discover, share and support inspiring sustainability efforts in their community, between towns, and across a range of environmental concerns, thus magnifying their impact.
GreenTowns invites people to submit local green initiatives they admire, and to share their expertise and experiences. The site then maps these initiatives by community and by category. Today, GreenTowns features more than 10,000 local groups and resources across a broad range of environmental issues including: building, connections, energy, food, land and conservation, lifestyle, recycling, transportation and water.
Subject matter experts and category advisors supplement content and facilitate conversations through blogs and the sharing of questions, information and support across topics and throughout the site. GreenTowns.com is a free service for green nonprofit organizations and local communities.
The GreenTowns team initiated the network with sustainability leaders and local green enthusiasts in its hometown community of Fairfield, CT, and it is now spreading to other cities and towns. Elected officials, business owners and green advocates have pledged their support. Media partners such as Reader’s Digest, BobVila.com, and E – The Environmental Magazine are helping to broaden the reach of the sustainability message.
