New York offers incentives for energy-efficient building projects

by Shane Henson — May 30, 2012—New York building owners and leaseholders wanting to improve the energy efficiency of new or substantially renovated buildings can get the ball rolling faster and cheaper through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) New Construction Program.

The program is administered by Sustainable Performance Consulting, which has been hired by NYSERDA to help building owners and their design teams select energy-efficient equipment and designs to receive maximum incentives.

There are different levels of participation, says NYSERDA. The New Construction Program is suitable for small projects involving energy-efficient lighting or HVAC equipment to larger projects in the design phase that are eligible for a whole building design analysis that will yield the highest level of energy savings and incentives.

The owners of existing buildings can receive pre-qualified NYSERDA incentives for future energy-efficient lighting, HVAC equipment, and motors from NYSERDA’s Existing Facilities Program. Applications must be submitted within 90 days after the purchase and installation of the equipment.

Building owners may also want to consider taking advantage of the free NYSERDA FlexTech Energy Audit Program for their buildings, says NYSERDA. This energy audit will provide all possible energy measures, including energy savings, cost estimates and available NYSERDA incentives to help reduce their operating costs.
