by Brianna Crandall — July 8, 2016 — The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) recently announced its partnership with advanced energy management software provider BuildingIQ and energy efficiency and demand side management (DSM) consulting firm Energy Solutions to implement a scaled deployment of BuildingIQ’s Predictive Energy Optimization (PEO) platform.
The large-scale demonstration is part of New York’s Emerging Technology Accelerated Commercialization Commercial-Institutional (ETAC-CI) program, which supports market adoption of energy-saving and load-reduction technologies through high-impact, statewide demonstrations and aligns with Governor Andrew Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) strategy.
BuildingIQ’s Predictive Energy Optimization (PEO) is a software platform designed to improve the energy efficiency of large, complex buildings, whether commercial, public or academic. Running as a software-as-service (SaaS), PEO optimizes around system efficiency, occupancy comfort and lowest cost.
The new NYSERDA project focuses on developing the market infrastructure necessary to bring the PEO technology to scale in New York State. As part of the demonstration, the cloud-based platform is being implemented statewide across a variety of buildings, including commercial offices spaces as well as those within the healthcare, education, and retail sectors. The project seeks to build consumer confidence through verified performance data at scale.
The project will offer training and certification on BuildingIQ’s cloud-based PEO platform, as well as up to $20,000 per building for installation. The pilot will run until fall 2017 or until incentive funds expire, says NYSERDA. It aims to expand BuildingIQ’s network of qualified installers and offer training on how Demand Response can improve customer value proposition.
Moreover, BuildingIQ’s monthly subscription pricing model minimizes upfront costs and is generally cash-flow positive within the first year of implementation, according to the company. With the PEO platform, energy reductions in HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) consumption in the range of 10%-25% are typical, adds the company, with reductions climbing to as high as 40% during operational peaks.
Developed through the support of NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Fund (CEF), which is designed to accelerate the state’s use of energy-saving innovations and improve customer decision-making, the pilot will validate project energy savings and publicly share results through published case studies, Webinars, and an interactive online dashboard. The aim is to promote customers’, contractors’ and other stakeholders’ understanding of the technology’s energy and non-energy benefits.
