Norland tapped to help U.K. procurement collaborative save millions using energy-efficient lighting

by Shane Henson — August 13, 2012—Members of the U.K.’s National Health Service Commercial Procurement Collaborative (NHSCPC) have chosen Norland, a U.K.-based provider of building services and facilities management, to serve as a preferred supplier for what the company says is one of the largest framework agreements for energy-efficient lighting in U.K. history. Per the contract, Norland will provide energy-efficient lighting using its Norland GREEN product.

NHS CPC is national procurement organization that uses its immense buying power to deliver millions of pounds of efficiencies and value-added benefits to its membership of 55 NHS trusts around the country. Its recent tender for LED lighting solutions identified that the adoption of energy-efficient lighting in the NHS has the potential to save £2.7 million and 30,000 metric tonnes of CO2 per year. Applicants, including Norland, were asked to detail how they might meet members’ needs around a number of criteria, including technical features, project management and mobilization, environmental benefits and commercials. After reviewing the many companies’ proposals, Norland’s solutions were deemed the best and most cost effective.

For NHS CPC, Norland’s lighting solutions will reduce energy costs and emissions and are cost-effective to decommission and dispose. They can be integrated with control systems to give just the light that is needed when it is needed, the company says. Norland also has a complete range of light-emitting diode (LED) lighting products ranging from LED lamps for retrofitting fluorescent tubes to fully dimmable presence and daylight-controlled IP65-rated LED luminaires. NHSCPC members will be able to benefit from Norland’s expertise in lighting and in providing performance guarantees for energy conservation measures.

Norland has more than 20 years of experience in the design of lighting plans for many applications. Its solutions are particularly well suited for healthcare given the company’s focus on infection control and innovative approaches that enhance well-being. Its lighting solutions have been used to provide pedestrians and vehicles with good visual guidance around hospitals and healthcare sites and in conjunction with closed-circuit television (CCTV) security solutions. All such solutions are fully conversant with statutory limitations on obtrusive lighting, the company says.
