by Brianna Crandall — January 14, 2013—The Wave, Muscat, billed as Oman’s premier lifestyle destination, recently completed one of the world’s longest off-shore man-made reefs, developed as part of the project’s master plan, after nearly three years of construction. Engineering firm WS Atkins designed the two-kilometer-long reef to provide protection from the Sea of Oman to the newly completed Almouj Marina and the rest of The Wave, Muscat, project’s residential properties and hotels.
The reef is constructed of more than 20,000 cement unit structures called Core-Locs, and is designed to reduce the height and strength of the sea during extreme conditions, as well as to enhance the marine habitat. Built on a base of 1,000,000 m3 of rock, the reef is 70 meters wide at its base and 17 meters high, and consists of 12-tonne and 17-tonne units accurately positioned to provide the correct density to dissipate the energy of the sea. The Core-Locs were made under license from Core Loc International by Carillion Alawi, and put into place by the Société National D’Entreprises (SNE).
The Wave, Muscat, is the first major integrated resort and residential development in the Greater Muscat, Oman, region. It is a unique public-private venture between the Government of the Sultanate of Oman and the UAE-based Majid Al Futtaim Properties. Occupying over six kilometers of natural beachfront, The Wave, Muscat, includes Almouj Golf, a Greg Norman Signature Golf Course; Oman’s largest private marina, Almouj Marina, and its 400 berths; and a harbor-front village.
Covering 2.5 million square meters, The Wave, Muscat, blends primary residences with holiday homes and investment opportunities, all within a few hundred meters of the beach or prime waterfront areas. The comfortable, architecturally authentic project offers visitors four world-class hotels and waterfront retail areas with al fresco coffee shops and dining options, and provides residential areas encompassing a mix of quality villas, townhouses and apartments, some of which are waterfront and beachfront. The area also offers foot paths, public open spaces and water views for all.
