by Brianna Crandall — May 24, 2013—Facilities owners and managers involved in space planning may be interested to note that the Open Standards Consortium for Real Estate (OSCRE International, Ltd.) has formed a Space Management Work Group to address the needs of organizations to analyze physical space for space planning and cost allocation. The Standard will provide the platform for defining data, including requirements to create or update floor plans and maintain data about individual space.
The development of this common set of data requirements and definitions to be added to OSCRE’s Data Dictionary creates a platform that expands the ability to exchange information with others, both internal and external to the organization. The Workgroup participants represent corporate real estate and facilities management organizations, government, space measurement services, service providers, space occupants and software vendors with a global presence.
“In today’s marketplace, real estate continues to grow as an international commodity. Likewise, management of a space portfolio has been diversified using both internal and external resources. The need for a universally recognized standard method of managing space has become more and more apparent. This Space Management Standard will be a valuable tool to analyze space data more quickly and flexibly for corporate real estate and facility managers, and improve reporting abilities for more effective portfolio management,” said Mark Featherstone, Chairman of the Workgroup and Portfolio Manager, Public Works and Government Services of Canada.

OSCRE also announced the appointment of Lisa Stanley as its new CEO. Stanley brings more than fifteen years association management experience to the position, as well as extensive experience in the real estate industry. “I am looking forward to working with the OSCRE Board to expand membership and the adoption of its standards while we explore new stakeholder groups and organizations who can benefit from the utilization of these standards,” said Stanley. “It’s an exciting time to become part of this organization, and to work collaboratively to meet the changing needs of those engaged in the real estate industry on an international level.”
OSCRE International is a member-based not-for-profit consortium committed to enabling people and organizations in the real estate industry to work more effectively through the development of a standardized electronic information exchange.
