OSHA provides additional earthquake, structural collapse safety information

by Jbs021010h3 — February 12, 2010—The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) expanded its online earthquake and structural collapse information for rescue workers and emergency responders. The agency provides the information to help minimize the risk of injury and death for workers assisting in the areas of earthquakes and structural collapse.

The Earthquakes safety and health guide provides general information on earthquakes, hazards, aftershocks and how to prepare; information for emergency responders on dealing with collapsed structures; and guidance on organizing rescue workers and emergency responders.

The Structural Collapse safety and health guide pertains to collapsed structures resulting from construction catastrophes, earthquakes, fire, terrorist activity, or weather-related structural failures. The site offers general information on collapsed structures, guidance in organizing rescue workers and emergency responders, and an explanation of hazards that may be encountered in such structures.

The Emergency Preparedness and Response safety and health topics page includes information from OSHA, NIOSH, CDC, FEMA and NIEHS. It covers such emergencies as wildfires, hurricanes, chemical and biological events, bioterrorism and radiation, and treats such topics as personal protective equipment, training and education, and equipment.
