Panasonic Corporation announces environment goals for products and offices

by Rebecca Walker — January 12, 2011—Panasonic Corporation of North America has unveiled new goals to lower the impact of its products as well as its offices.

Over the next three years, the company wants to double sales of products that meet Energy Star requirements, carry the EPEAT silver or gold labels or meet its own Panasonic Superior Green Products standards.

Through selling more energy efficient products and developing more efficient goods, Panasonic aims for its goods to help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 8 million tons by 2013.

On the emissions front, it also plans to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from its headquarters by 45 percent.

With an eye on the end of life of its wares, Panasonic wants to double the number of locations for its electronics recycling program, from the current 833 spots to 1,600, also by 2013. The program, run by the Electronic Manufacturers Recycling Management Company, also accepts products from some other brands.

Beyond the company’s own products and operations, it plans to provide environmental educational information to at least 500,000 students and is sponsoring a new scholarship program with The EARTH University in Costa Rica.

Around mid-2010, Panasonic laid out a global plan for its environmental activities, called Green Transformation 2012, and then later in the year released its Green Plan 2018, which included specific emissions and technology goals for that year.
