Panduit offers Unified Physical Infrastructure solution for data center energy management

by Rebecca Walker — December 14, 2009—Panduit, a pioneering physical infrastructure solutions company, is unveiling a revolutionary vision to “smarten up” new and existing buildings called the Unified Physical Infrastructure (UPI) approach.

Representatives from Panduit Corp., U.S. Green Building Council National Capitol Region Chapter, Cisco Systems and Tridium Inc. met recently with government representatives and environmental interest groups to describe the Unified Physical Infrastructure (UPI) approach being employed by industry leaders to reduce energy use in data centers and in new and existing buildings.

Panduit’s revolutionary approach helps drive innovative solutions for Smart Data Centers and Connected Buildings. These solutions address key sustainability concerns of government agencies and lay the foundation for a smarter infrastructure that can help reduce energy consumption and lower energy costs by up to 30 percent.

“The building sector is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than both transportation and industry, which is indicative of the gross inefficiency of U.S. buildings,” said Shannon D. Sentman, board member of U.S. Green Building Council National Capitol Region Chapter and principal at Sol Vista Consulting. “This inefficiency is costly to both the environment and to whoever pays the energy bills.”

Buildings consume 72 percent of all the electricity produced in the U.S. and emit almost 40 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions, according to the U.S. Green Building Council. A recent Executive Order from President Barack Obama calling for “Federal Leadership in Environmental, Energy, and Economic Performance” requires government agencies to set new goals for reducing energy and greenhouse gas emissions and to operate and construct high-performance, sustainable buildings.

“Our UPI-based solutions can help government agencies reach their ambitious new energy goals,” said Darryl Benson, Global Solutions Manager at Panduit Corp. “Retrofits to existing buildings and proper planning of new facilities can provide significant operational, financial and environmental benefits.”

The UPI approach integrates critical building functions that are historically siloed, such as power, communications, computing, security and control to deliver improved energy efficiency, reliability and security. It provides a vision for the evolution of the physical infrastructure that aligns closely with and provides a solid foundation for the evolution of the logical systems infrastructure as defined by leading IT companies. Panduit is partnering with these industry leaders to develop integrated physical-logical, UPI based solutions.
