Philadelphia-based PECO Energy Company, in partnership with Community Energy Inc., a renewable energy marketing company, recently announced its intent to offer newly developed wind power to its customers in southeastern Pennsylvania. The wind power will be made available as a voluntary premium offering to customers under a new rate that will be submitted to the state Public Utility Commission.
The wind energy delivered to PECO customers will be supplied from new Pennsylvania wind farms: a 15.4-megawatt project in Mill Run, Fayette County, announced on March 14; a 9-megawatt project in Somerset, along the Pennsylvania Turnpike west of Harrisburg; and other projects across Pennsylvania.
Customers will be offered pure wind energy in “wind blocks,” and they can ensure that a certain share of their power supply comes from the new Pennsylvania wind farms. Each wind block will be based on kilowatt-hours so customers can determine how much extra they would like to spend each month to support wind energy. For instance, five dollars more would represent about a third of a typical residential customer’s monthly usage.
PECO and CEI will soon accept pre-subscriptions from interested customers in advance of the wind farms’ anticipated energy production later this year.
