Popular Science names 50 greenest cities in US

March 10, 2008—Popular Science magazine has named what it considers the 50 greenest cities in the US, based on their performance in the areas of electricity, transportation, green living, and recycling and green perspective.

Popular Science asserts that the list, based on data from the US Census Bureau and National Geographic Society’s Green Guide, shows that cities across the nation are taking the lead to fight climate change, rather than waiting for the federal government.

The top 10 cities are: Portland, OR; San Francisco, CA; Boston, MA; Oakland, CA; Eugene, OR; Cambridge, MA; Berkeley, CA; Seattle, WA; Chicago, IL; and Austin, TX.

For the complete list, as well as several case studies on trailblazing civic projects, see the Popular Science article.
