Pratt and Whitney is a United Technologies Corp. (UTC) company.

There are currently more than 5,000 buildings worldwide certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system, but only about five percent have earned Platinum certification.

Located in the Qingpu district, the Shanghai Engine Center opened in September 2009 as an environmentally friendly and highly efficient CFM56 engine maintenance, repair and overhaul facility. The facility incorporates high-performance building solutions from other UTC businesses.

More than 20 percent of the center’s construction material was sourced locally, and 10 percent to 20 percent recycled content was used in construction, with 70 percent of construction waste being diverted to recycling. The facility uses daylighting, a cool roof and 12.5 percent renewable energy. Overall site water use will be reduced by 40 percent from conventional facility designs, and landscaping water use will be reduced by about 50 percent.
